Case Study – Food Processing CIP

Problem:

A leading soup manufacturer was repeatedly recording high levels of biological contamination in their CIP process and end-product and was experiencing lengthy batch change-over cycles as a result. Soup stock Quality Control requires that microbe counts are taken after packing which leads to high financial losses if the batch fails and has to be disposed of. The high level of cross-contamination within the existing CIP regime was leading to high batch fail levels and a solution to these losses had to be found.

Legionella Control in a Hotel Setting

Problem:

A city hotel carried out a Legionella risk assessment to comply with L8 Legionella prevention and as a result several concerns were highlighted. Existing procedures required twice yearly cleaning on the buildings drinking water but this was felt unsatisfactory as a preventative maintenance solution was required. It is well documented that biofilms, that house Legionella, start re-establishing as soon as the treatment process has finished.

Legionella Control – Water Distribution System

Problem:

The Dutch Ministry of Environment and Health sought a solution for the prevention of Legionella in complex drinking water distribution systems in buildings and instigated a trial, which was carried out under the supervision of the KIWA Water Institute, at the University of Groningen. The existing measures for control of Legionella required twice yearly cleaning and sanitising of the entire drinking water system.

Floating Hotel Case Study

Problem:

The Bibby Line in Liverpool, one of the oldest privately owned shipping companies in the world, had an urgent need in late 2006 for an effective and robust water disinfection system coping with a daily flow of 300m3 for both cold and hot water supplies for the Bibby Progress, one of their fleet of floating hotels which was on its way to Nigeria under long-term lease with Chevron to provide three star accommodation and board for up to 900 workers who are constructing a gas-liquids plant in the Niger Delta.

Environmental infection control and food contact surface sanitizing

Problem:

The Hennepin County Correctional Facility is the largest such facility in the State of Minnesota. Their board of supervisors is focused on sustainable operations and was seeking alternatives to the use of toxic chemicals for food contact surface sanitizing, cleaning surfactants and especially facility-wide infection control. They sought non-toxic alternatives as they had experienced disease transmission of certain drug-resistant nosocomial pathogens in their cell blocks and their inmates had previously abused certain toxic chemicals intended for use for food contact surface sanitization.

Waterborne Hygiene Risks in Dental Clinics

Problem:

Water samples were obtained from seven independent dental clinics in Muenster and the Northern Ruhr-region of Germany. The number of CFUs measured at 22°C and 36°C (procedure as per the recommendation of the Robert Koch Institute) were found to be well above the acceptable, safe levels in all samples. The highest recorded finding in one of the samples reached a staggering
